Indian Land Tenure Foundation (ILTF) has developed a curriculum - “Lessons of Our Land” - for implementation in pre-K and K-12 classrooms. The curriculum provides American Indian and non-Indian students with broader insight and understanding of land, cultures, inherent rights and tribal sovereignty. “Lessons of Our Land” teaches the Native American story of this land from historical to modern times. The larger goal is that every citizen will identify with the land he or she lives on and will be better prepared to solve the difficult issues that impact communities on or near reservations today.

Since 2005, “Lessons of Our Land” has been successfully implemented in 105 tribal schools, public schools and colleges in:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Idaho
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • Montana
  • South Dakota
  • Washington

The diversity in students, location and size of the schools where the curriculum has been implemented has provided valuable lessons and sample modifications that enable successful implementation in various settings. As the program has grown, ILTF recognized the need for a website to make the curriculum available to more teachers, more parents and more students.
